This is a portrait of my wife, Helen reading at the kitchen table. The shadows were so strong and dark on the table that I immediately wanted to capture the image. I used oil paints so that I could use the traditional glazing technique to convey the shadows in Helen's clothes and in the vase. The tulips were particularly difficult to reproduce and didn't seem to respond well to glazing. The painting is intended to reflect a well deserved time out for Helen and all other wives.
